Crew career paths can be complicated, with different positions offered depending on the size of the vessel or the owner's desires. The plethora of jobs on board can be separated into four main career paths: deckhand to captain, steward/ess to purser, third engineer to chief engineer, and junior chef to head chef. SuperyachtJobs.com has provided detailed descriptions (job responsibilities, qualifications needed, and courses and experience preferred) of both the familiar career path progressions, as well as those on-board jobs that are less common, but still in demand.

CAREER PATH: DECKHAND TO CAPTAIN | STEWARD/ESS TO PURSER | CHEF TO HEAD CHEF | THIRD ENGINEER TO CHIEF ENGINEER

Deck crew are responsible for the day-to-day operations of running a yacht and maintaining the exterior of the yacht.

DECKHAND
Responsibilities will include maintaining the exterior of a vessel to a high standard. You may be required to stand helm, security or engine room watches and may be involved with small boat handling. You must be capable to conduct fire, man over board, or other drills as the captains sees fit and necessary. Carries out orders from the first mate and/or captain.
Salary: €1,900 - €2,700 pcm
Qualifications needed: STCW
Preferred courses/experience: Powerboat Level 2, VHF Radio, Yachtmaster Offshore 200gt

BOSUN
Responsibilities will include cleaning and basic maintenance of all the tenders, wind surf, diving gear and water toys. Also responsible for the mooring lines, marlin spike techniques and splicing. Must list and order cleaning products and maintain deck log according to the mate. Carries out orders from first mate and/or captain.
Salary: €2,300 - €3,500 pcm
Qualifications needed: STCW, Yachtmaster Offshore
Preferred courses/experience: Officer of the Watch (OOW); only deckhand experience may be needed for smaller yachts

CHIEF OFFICER/FIRST MATE
Responsibilities will include carrying out captain's orders, assisting in navigation and is responsible for the total exterior of the yacht. Implements security/port-of-entry paperwork procedures and has knowledge of the International Safety Management (ISM) and International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) codes. Sets an example of work style, cleanliness and neatness for all the crew to follow and maintains guest relations. Plans each day's work to achieve the most accomplishment from each deck crewmember. Acts as the second in command when the captain is off the boat and so must be ready to take charge of all jobs and the responsibility of these jobs.
Carries out orders from the captain.
Salary: €5,000 - €12,000 pcm
Qualifications needed: Chief Mate 3,000gt, Master 3,000gt, Master Unlimited (for yachts where chief officer may need to step in for captain)

CAPTAIN
Responsibilities will include handling the yacht, and is in charge of the safe operation of the yacht, yacht administration, management of crew and personnel, accounting and budget management, and may act as refit supervisor. The captain is also in charge of required licenses. The captain is the top level of this career path, and as such will report only to the owner or owner's representative.
Salary: €4,700 - €14,000 pcm
Qualifications needed: Yachtmaster Offshore 200gt, Master 500gt, Master 3000gt, Master Unlimited or USCG equivalent

Having qualifications as a dive instructor, fitness instructor, watersports instructor, and/or masseuse will also be an advantage and some larger yachts may employ someone specifically for each role.


Each and every position in this range of interior roles is dedicated to ensuring that owner and guests have the best on-board experience possible. This career path begins with the steward/ess position, after which crewmembers work up towards chief steward/ess and then purser.

STEWARD/ESS
Responsibilities will include polishing and cleaning, table-setting, floral-arranging, wine selection and services, silver, Russian or French service, and cabin/linen services. You may also be required to help out on deck, though this request is more likely from a sailing yacht. Carries out orders from chief steward/ess and/or purser.
Salary: €1,900 - €2,300 pcm with no experience / €2,300 - €2,700 pcm with experience
Qualifications needed: STCW
Preferred courses/experience: Silver service, floral-arranging, bartending, and barista

CHIEF STEWARD/ESS
Responsibilities will include both those of a steward/ess and a managerial role, organising the stewards and stewardesses. On larger yachts this position lies hierarchically above the steward/ess and below the purser, but on smaller yachts this role often takes the place of the purser. Carries out orders from the purser.
Salary: €3,000 - €6,600 pcm
Qualifications needed: STCW
Helpful courses/experience: Silver service, wine, bartending, barista, floral-arranging, housekeeping procedures, accounting and provisioning, a second language, and a minimum of two years' experience on yachts

PURSER
Responsibilities will include the overseeing of junior stewards and stewardesses, provisioning the yacht with food, beverages, cleaning supplies and uniforms, whilst also working with the head chef on menus. Paperwork plays an important role and is needed to ensure accurate budgeting, accounting and bookkeeping, purchasing, scheduling, crew management, and business relations with management companies and owners' representatives, though sometimes the captain will take on some of these roles. At the top of the interior career ladder, the purser will report to the captain, and at times the chef.
Salary: €3,100 - €4,700 pcm
Qualifications needed: STCW
Preferred courses/experience: Knowledge of Microsoft Office and accounting software such as Quicken, marine-based operational background, and a second language

Below you will find a list of additional roles in this career path found only on larger yachts

SECOND STEWARD/ESS
Responsibilities will include those of a steward/ess, though this is a more junior role, especially on yachts larger than 45 metres. Carries out orders from the chief steward/ess and/or the purser.
Salary: €2,200 - €2,500 pcm on yachts smaller than 45 metres / €3,000 - €3,600 pcm on yachts larger than 45 metres
Qualifications needed: STCW
Preferred courses/experience: Silver service, floral-arranging, wine, bartending and barista

SERVICE STEWARD/ESS
Responsibilities will include dining-room services such as the perfect laying of the table and meal-time service. Carries out orders from the lead steward/ess, the chief steward/ess and/or the purser.
Salary: €2,700
Qualifications needed: STCW
Preferred courses/experience: Silver service, wine, bartending, and barista

LEAD SERVICE STEWARD/ESS
Responsibilities will include those of the service steward/ess but with an overseeing, organisational role. Carries out orders from the chief steward/ess and/or the purser.
Salary: €3,100 - €4,700 pcm
Qualifications needed: STCW
Preferred courses/experience: Silver service, wine and spirits, barista, cigars, event-planning, culinary terminology and presentation procedures, inventory maintenance, and minimum of four years' experience in high-end service and/or large private yacht sector(s)

HOUSEKEEPING STEWARD/ESS
Responsibilities will include the upkeep of cabins, with focus on linens and laundry, and can be likened to that of the housekeeping role in a luxury hotel. Carries out orders from the lead housekeeping steward/ess, the chief steward/ess and/or the purser.
Salary: €2,300 - €2,700 pcm
Qualifications needed: STCW
Preferred courses/experience: Introductory interior yacht course outlining housekeeping procedures and laundry

LEAD HOUSEKEEPING STEWARD/ESS
Responsibilities will include those of the housekeeping steward/ess but with an overseeing, organisational role. Carries out orders from the chief steward/ess and/or the purser.
Salary: €3,100 - €4,700 pcm
Qualifications needed: STCW
Preferred courses/experience: Cleaning product knowledge, care of high-end crystal, marble, gold-finished items, wardrobe/valet housekeeping procedures, floral-arranging, laundry, and inventory procedures

LAUNDRY STEWARD/ESS
Responsibilities will include washing and ironing of clothes and linen. Carries out orders from chief steward/ess and/or purser.
Salary: €1,900 - €2,700 pcm (salary will be higher for seasoned laundry steward/ess on yachts larger than 60 metres)
Qualifications needed: STWC

STEWARD/ESS / NURSE
Responsibilities will include providing medical care and performing the duties of a steward/ess. Carries out orders from the chief steward/ess and/or the purser.
Salary: €2,700 - €3,900 pcm
Qualifications needed: STCW, registered nurse/licensed practical nurse certification/medical certificate

STEWARD/ESS / MASSEUSE
Responsibilities will include providing massage treatments to guests and those of a steward/ess. Carries out orders from the chief steward/ess and/or the purser.
Salary: €2,700 - €3,500 pcm
Qualifications needed: STCW, massage course
Preferred courses/experience: hot stone massage, reflexology, Thai massage, sports massage, Steiner training for cruise ships, Indian head massage, and lymphatic drainage

STEWARD/ESS / MASSEUSE / BEAUTY THERAPIST
Responsibilities will include providing massage and beauty treatments to guests and those of a steward/ess. Carries out orders from the chief steward/ess and/or the purser.
Salary: €2,700 - €3,900 pcm
Qualifications needed: STCW, massage course, beauty treatment course
Preferred courses/experience: hot stone massage, reflexology, Thai massage, sports massage, Steiner training for cruise ships, Indian head massage, lymphatic drainage, manicure, pedicure, facials, wraps and waxing


Exquisite food is a must for many yacht owners and charter guests, so the role of a chef on board is absolutely crucial, however the specific roles on board vary drastically between yachts. Yachts smaller than 50 metres will often have two chefs, yachts from 50 metres – 75 metres will normally have three chefs, and yachts larger than 75 metres will normally have five chefs.

GALLEY HAND
Responsibilities will include assisting in the cleaning of the galley, and is a role normally found only on larger yachts. Carries out orders from the head chef.
Salary: €2,300 - €2,700 pcm
Qualifications needed: STCW

CREW CHEF
Responsibilities will include preparing meals for the crewmembers; on some yachts, particularly large ones, a role is dedicated solely to cooking for the crew. Carries out orders from head chef.
Salary: €2,300 - €3,100 pcm
Qualifications needed: STCW, culinary certifications

SOLE CHEF
Responsibilities will include preparing meals for everyone on board, and working with the purser/chief steward/ess on menus and provisioning. Yachts of 50 metres or less will often have just one chef on board – the sole chef. As the only chef on board he/she reports to the captain.
Salary: €2,700 - €7,000 pcm
Qualifications needed: STCW
Preferred courses/experience: Culinary training, at least 2 years' experience for those on board yachts of 40 metres or larger

SECOND CHEF
Responsibilities will include aiding the preparation of on-board meals. The second chef is normally the third in line on larger yachts. Carries out orders from the sous and head chefs.
Salary: €2,700 - €3,900 pcm
Qualifications needed: STCW, culinary training

SOUS CHEF
Responsibilities will include the preparation of food of the highest standard for guests on board, and working very closely with the head chef.
Salary: €2,700 - €4,700 pcm
Qualifications needed: STCW, culinary training
Preferred courses/experience: Baking

HEAD CHEF
Responsibilities will include heading the preparation of all on-board meals for guest, as well as working with the purser with regards to provisioning and to create menus while understanding complimentary wine. At the top of the chef career ladder, the head chef only reports to the captain.
Salary: €3,900 - €9,400 pcm
Qualifications needed: STCW, culinary training, World Association of Chefs Societies (WACS), food and hygiene certificate
Preferred courses/experience: Michelin Star experience, fruit carving, ice carving, sushi, baking and charter experience


Engineers are essential on yachts to help maintain all the electrical and mechanical systems and ensure they are in good working order, as well as ensuring safety in the engine room and working on fire prevention. Responsibilities for engineer positions increase with rank. Many of these tickets are needed on some boats, but useful to have on others; a lot of flexibility can exist in this particular career path.

Electronic Technical Officer (ETO)
Responsibilities will include maintaining all aspects of the yacht's electrical and electronic systems. ETOs are generally employed on larger superyachts where the engineering department comprises around four or five crew. Carries out orders from chief the engineer.
Salary: Variable
Qualifications needed: No real tickets but must have experience with IT/networks/computers and AV equipment
Preferred courses/experience: Degree or diploma in computer science

THIRD ENGINEER
Responsibilities will include cleaning and maintaining the engine room, and is a position found only on larger yachts. He or she may also have to help with deck duties so must be flexible with regards to on-board duties. Carries out orders from the chief engineer.
Salary: €2,800+ pcm
Qualifications needed: Approved Engine Course (AEC) - sometimes they can be unlicensed but seldom, and if so, would need experience
Preferred courses/experience: Marine Engine Operator License (MEOL), Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW), Yacht 4 (Y4)

SECOND ENGINEER
Responsibilities will include ensuring the safety, cleanliness and maintenance of the engine room, and maintaining general systems on board. Carries out orders from the chief engineer.
Salary: €2,800+ pcm
Qualifications needed: Approved Engine Course (AEC), Marine Engine Operator License (MEOL), Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW), Second Engineer Unlimited, Unlicensed
Preferred courses/experience: Yacht 2 (Y2), Yacht 3 (Y3), Yacht 4 (Y4)

FIRST ENGINEER
Responsibilities will include ensuring the safety, cleanliness and maintenance of the engine room, and maintaining general systems on board, but is of a higher rank than the second engineer. Carries out orders from chief engineer.
Salary: Variable
Qualifications needed: Approved Engine Course (AEC), Marine Engine Operator License (MEOL), Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW), Second Engineer Unlimited, Unlicensed
Preferred courses/experience: Chief Engineer Unlimited or USCG equivalent

CHIEF ENGINEER
Responsibilities will include the maintenance of the yacht's electrical and mechanical systems, keeping them in good working order, and informing crewmembers about the yacht's demands and limitations. Must have the ability to isolate a problem and if a permanent solution is not available, to invent a temporary solution. The chief engineer is the top level of this career path, so will only carry out orders from the captain.
Salary: €3,800 - €11,000 pcm
Qualifications needed: Chief Engineer Commercial Unlimited Class 1, Chief Engineer Commercial Unlimited Class 2, Approved Engine Course (AEC), Marine Engine Operator License (MEOL), Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW), Second Engineer Unlimited, Unlicensed, or USCG equivalent
Preferred courses/experience: Yacht 1 – Chief Engineer, Yacht 2 – Chief Engineer, Yacht 3 – Chief Engineer, Yacht 4 – Chief Engineer
