Steward/ess to Purser

Each and every position in this range of interior roles is dedicated to ensuring that owner and guests have the best on-board experience possible. This career path begins with the steward/ess position, after which crewmembers work up towards chief steward/ess and then purser.

STEWARD/ESS
Responsibilities will include polishing and cleaning, table-setting, floral-arranging, wine selection and services, silver, Russian or French service, and cabin/linen services. You may also be required to help out on deck, though this request is more likely from a sailing yacht. Carries out orders from chief steward/ess and/or purser.

Preferred courses/experience: Silver service, floral-arranging, bartending, and barista

CHIEF STEWARD/ESS
Responsibilities will include both those of a steward/ess and a managerial role, organising the stewards and stewardesses. PURSER

Paperwork plays an important role and is needed to ensure accurate budgeting, accounting and bookkeeping, purchasing, scheduling, crew management, and business relations with management companies and owners' representatives, though sometimes the captain will take on some of these roles. At the top of the interior career ladder, the purser will report to the captain, and at times the chef.
